The most helpful warm up during this unit was sign language A. I've always struggled with drawing hands, I would always have to use a video to help me through the steps. This exercise helped me learn how to do it free handed and from my own perspective.
Composition means the way your work is presented or aligned. The composition alignment tends to be along the rule of thirds, which is the way your eyes follow objects. Value is the shade or tint or tone of a color. The pro of pen is that you do not have to worry about coloring it in precisely, there are many ways to make it look nice without being too dark. The con of pen is that you cannot erase it and it can smudge if you leave the pen in one place for too long. A pro of pencil drawing is that it is erasable and you can draw in better detail. A con of pencil is that it smudges on your hands and can sometimes smear on the paper. A pro of charcoal is that it is easy to fill in and you're almost curving the image out of the charcoal. A con of charcoal is the noise it makes when you are trying to draw. Yes and no, I worked on the purple swatches specifically. The whole process wasn't inherently hard, I definitely had to be careful when I added new colors to the mix and not just guess randomly. I believe we combined blue and orange, but this was defiantly a lot harder as we did not have a surplus of orange paint. It took awhile but we did pull through and make browns.
Matthew Shlian is an artist that creates paper sculptures by forming geometric patterns. Originally he wanted to work with ceramics but he developed an interest working with paper. By researching pop-up books and how they work and it evolved into his work now. Shlian works scientists from the University of Michigan to make his complex sculptures, helping him to create micro folds.
Shlian's colored pieces look really beautiful, and add a whole new layer of texture to them. Another thing that is cool about their texture is that in some of them it gives it a crystallized form, or for instance the one to the right here, a granite sort of style. It's really nice to see art and sculptures that aren't just of people or something completely random. There's a defiant structure to them, but they're not common, and that's really cool! |
